Easter, the beautiful celebration of Spring and fertility is here. Have you decorated your house and dyed the eggs yet? Don’t worry if you haven’t; there is enough time to let your creative side to do the job and decorate the eggs. We, at Kameleon Rose, love the creative ideas and try a different way of dyeing eggs each year. And this year we are going to use all natural ingredients. We have prepared a list of natural ways to dye the eggs for 2019 Easter. Hopefully, you will find a natural way of dying the eggs which you can do at home.
There are lots of discussions going on about the chemicals used in the food coloring and other dyes used for dying the eggs which can be harmful. In any case, using and ingesting chemicals isn’t ideal, so why not try a natural way? The chance is that you probably have most of the ingredients in your kitchen. Depending on which color you want the eggs to be, you will need a few different ingredients. Also, we recommend wearing rubber gloves when handling the colored eggs, as some of the ingredients can stain the skin.
The color yellow is a lovely spring color, and if you want to use it for the egg dyeing, you will need some turmeric. Boil it in the water with a bit of vinegar, then add the eggs and simmer for about 30 minutes. Then leave it be for some time. The end result will be a sunny yellow color.
It might be a surprise to some, but you can get a lovely pastel blue color by boiling the purple cabbage. To make a blue dye, you will need to boil the shredded purple cabbage and add 1-2 tablespoons of vinegar. Set aside for a few hours then add the boiled eggs. The longer you keep the eggs in the mixture the stronger the color will be. If you use white eggs, they will turn blue if you use brown eggs they will come out as green.
There is more than one natural ingredient to colour eggs red: for example, berries, beetroot or wine. We recommend using beetroot juice. Shred the beetroot and simmer it for 30mins or so. Let it cool to room temperature and pour it to small jars or cups, add 1-2 tablespoons of vinegar. Place the eggs in the jars and leave it to soak for some time. The longer the eggs are left in the dye, the stronger the color will be.
Onions have been used in egg coloring for centuries around the world. Boiled onion skins give a beautiful orange or brown shade. The darker onion will give a deeper brown colour, and the yellow onion will leave the eggs more orange. It is quite a simple method. You will need around 4 cups of onion skins and enough water to cover them. Bring the water to boil then lower the heat and simmer for 30 minutes. Add vinegar and let it cool a bit. Place the eggs and the prepared dye and leave as long as needed. It can be left overnight in the fridge for a beautiful deep color.
If you are feeling very creative then why not wrap a few herbs around the egg? It will leave them with captivating natural shapes of the leaves used. To make sure that the herb is placed firmly enough, apply a thin cotton cloth to wrap it around the egg before putting into the dye.
